Airlink Communications, a prominent player in Pakistan’s Mobile industry, has reported remarkable growth. While maintaining its stronghold in the mobile phone market alongside its subsidiary, Select Technologies, Airlink is now poised to make a significant leap into the electric vehicle (EV) sector—a move that could transform both the company and Pakistan’s economic landscape.

The recent arrival of the Xiaomi SU7 Max electric vehicle at Karachi Port has sparked interest, with sources revealing that Airlink is preparing to launch this electric car in Pakistan soon, according to a report by ProPakistani.

The vehicle, developed in collaboration with Xiaomi, is expected to compete with industry leaders like BYD and Tesla in China. Priced at ¥215,900 (approximately Rs. 8.5 million), the Xiaomi SU7 positions itself among luxury vehicles in Pakistan. Given the limited domestic market for high-end EVs, Airlink plans to focus on exporting the vehicle to right-hand drive markets globally, following the footsteps of companies like Changan and Master Motors.

In addition to its foray into the EV market, Airlink is exploring several growth avenues that promise to enhance its financial performance. Starting November 2024, the company will begin reporting revenue from its smart TV sales, diversifying its product portfolio. Moreover, Airlink is in the process of acquiring a 5G license from the Government of Pakistan, which is expected to boost connectivity and yield substantial financial returns for both the company and the government.

CEO Muzzaffar Piracha has projected that Airlink will generate at least PKR 25 billion in revenue from laptop sales in FY25, with an estimated 150,000 units sold. The company is also engaged in high-level discussions with the government to address mobile export opportunities, aiming to further increase its revenue potential.

A key focus of these discussions is the removal of inconsistencies in the import and export duties on mobile-related equipment. Currently, there is an 80% duty on importing charger parts, while fully assembled chargers incur no duty. The government is working to rectify these anomalies, which is expected to encourage local manufacturing and open new export avenues for Airlink.

With these strategic initiatives, Airlink Communications is set to not only expand its market presence but also contribute significantly to Pakistan’s technological and economic advancement.
