The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an official Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for northern regions of the country, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and isolated snowfall that could trigger flash floods and landslides.

According to the alert issued by PMD’s Research and Development Division, a moderate westerly weather system is expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan from May 3, bringing widespread rain and unstable weather conditions throughout the month.

Authorities warned that rising temperatures combined with expected precipitation could significantly increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, particularly in vulnerable mountainous valleys.

The alert covers several high-risk areas including Upper Chitral, Chitral Shandur, Yasin, Phander, Baduswat, lower Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Ghizer Gahkuch, Shigar, Swat, upper Chitral, Dir, and Astore.

Officials cautioned that sudden surges in water levels, mudflows, and falling rocks may occur near riverbanks and stream beds during periods of rainfall.

Residents living in glacial valleys have been advised to avoid flood-prone zones, closely monitor local water channels for unusual changes, and move livestock and essential belongings to safer locations.

Disaster management authorities have been directed to remain on 24/7 alert, maintain communication links in remote areas, and coordinate with Community Based Disaster Risk Management Committees for rapid response if emergencies arise.

PMD urged local administrations and residents to stay vigilant, follow official advisories, and take precautionary measures to prevent loss of life and property.
