Pakistan’s rapidly expanding distributed solar market is driving a sharp increase in demand for battery energy storage systems, with industry estimates showing battery storage imports surged by 220% in 2025.
Solar company Trina Solar said the country’s growing installed solar capacity is accelerating interest in pairing solar systems with batteries, particularly for utility scale projects, commercial facilities, industrial users and microgrids.
Research by Ember and Renewables First estimates that Pakistan now has nearly 38GW of distributed solar capacity installed across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors, making it one of the fastest growing distributed solar markets globally.
According to Renewables First, Pakistan imported around 4.6 GWh of battery energy storage systems in 2025, more than three times the previous year’s level.
Industry experts said battery storage is increasingly being used to store surplus solar electricity generated during daylight hours and make it available when demand rises, particularly during evening hours when grid dependence typically increases.
However, experts cautioned that the financial and operational benefits of battery storage depend on system design, electricity consumption patterns, facility requirements and proper technical integration.
Installing batteries with existing solar systems requires detailed assessments of electrical infrastructure, inverter compatibility, load requirements, energy management systems and compliance with safety standards.
One common solution is AC coupled storage, where batteries are connected through a separate power conversion system, allowing them to work alongside existing solar installations without major modifications. However, compatibility checks remain essential before installation.
Trina Storage, the energy storage division of Trinasolar, said it is working with engineering and construction partners in Pakistan to evaluate project requirements and develop customized storage solutions.
The company said it has supplied more than 500MW of solar modules exceeding 700W capacity for residential, commercial and industrial projects in Pakistan and recently launched its Vertex N G3 760W module series.
Globally, Trina Storage was established in 2015 and has maintained BloombergNEF Tier 1 Energy Storage Manufacturer status for ten consecutive quarters.
The company expects cumulative battery storage shipments to surpass 30 GWh in the first half of 2026 and recently launched its 6.25MWh Elementa 3 platform for large scale energy storage projects.
