The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has once again fallen short of its tax collection target, with the gap widening to Rs 683 billion during the first ten months of the current fiscal year, according to official sources.

For the July to April period, the revised tax collection target was set at Rs 10,946 billion. However, the FBR managed to collect Rs 10,363 billion, leaving a significant shortfall against expectations.

In April alone, the tax authority also failed to meet its monthly target. Against a goal of Rs 1,029 billion, total collections stood at Rs 956 billion, resulting in a monthly gap of Rs 73 billion.

Breakdown of April collections shows income tax stood at Rs 446 billion, sales tax at Rs 320 billion, federal excise duty at Rs 65 billion, and customs duty at Rs 125 billion.

Earlier, the annual tax target was set at Rs 14,131 billion, which was later revised downward to Rs 13,979 billion. Despite this adjustment, overall performance continues to lag behind projections, with the revenue gap remaining substantial.

Officials sources indicate that the persistent shortfall reflects ongoing pressure on revenue generation and weaker-than-expected tax inflows throughout the fiscal year.
