The Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works has called for action against contractors who fail to complete federal employees’ housing projects on time.

The committee, chaired by Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt, expressed concern over repeated delays and questioned why contractors were allowed to continue despite missing project deadlines.

Chairman Butt said contractors in other countries face daily penalties for delays. He questioned why some contractors in Pakistan receive substantial funding despite completing only a small part of their assigned work.

Senator Saifullah Abro also demanded action against contractors responsible for incomplete projects. The Housing Secretary warned that cancelling contracts could lead to legal disputes and further delays.

The committee also reviewed encroachments in Islamabad’s G-14 and G-15 sectors. The Deputy Commissioner Islamabad said no new encroachments had appeared in the areas, while efforts were underway to remove existing ones. Ministry officials said anti-encroachment operations were being carried out daily.

The committee separately reviewed the Green Enclave I housing project. The contractor and joint venture partner told the committee that they had reached an understanding and committed to completing the project within 18 months.

The Housing Secretary said the contractor must meet its responsibilities toward affected allottees instead of continuing to raise financial demands from the ministry.

The committee chairman said members would visit Green Enclave I every month to monitor progress and ensure the project is completed.

The meeting also saw Senator Haji Hidayatullah complain that the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad had not responded to his calls and messages. The committee chairman directed the deputy commissioner to address such complaints in the future.
