Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated that US President Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India in 2025.
In a post on X on Friday, Shehbaz said Trump played a historic role in advancing peace in South Asia by intervening during the military escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
“His timely intervention helped bring Pakistan and India back from the brink and secure a ceasefire, that is holding till today,” the prime minister said.
Shehbaz added that Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his contribution to regional peace.
“We sincerely hope President’s efforts to promote peace and prevent conflict in our region receive due recognition this time,” he said.
Pakistan announced its decision to nominate Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in June 2025, citing his diplomatic role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India. The ceasefire followed a military confrontation between the two countries in May 2025.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced South African jurist Navi Pillay as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
