The Pakistani rupee extended its upward momentum on Friday, closing stronger against the US dollar for the 161st consecutive trading session.

The local currency ended the day at 278.61 against the dollar, posting a marginal gain of one paisa.

In contrast, the rupee recorded broad-based gains against major global currencies during the session, with the sharpest movement seen against the British pound.

The pound fell significantly, pushing the rupee up by Rs4.11. The euro also weakened, allowing the rupee to gain nearly Rs1.99.

Among other currencies, the rupee strengthened by Rs2.28 against the Australian dollar and 56 paisas against the Canadian dollar.

The rupee remained largely stable against Gulf currencies, showing negligible movement against the UAE dirham and a slight gain of one paisa against the Saudi riyal.

Overall, the data shows mixed but generally positive movement for the rupee, with notable strength against major European and Commonwealth currencies, while remaining steady against the US dollar and Gulf currencies.
