Pakistan’s pulses sector emerged as the fastest-growing crop category in FY2025-26, posting a strong 31.4% increase in production, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26.
The sharp rise made pulses the top-performing group within major crops, driven largely by a significant expansion in output across key varieties.
Among individual crops, gram recorded the most dramatic jump, surging 50.4% to 258,600 tons, as cultivated area expanded notably year-on-year. Moong production also rose 15.2% to 151,100 tons. However, masoor and mash saw declines of 8% and 3.7%, respectively.
The overall “other crops” segment grew 2.43% following recovery from flood-related disruptions, supported by higher production of vegetables (up 12.6%) and fruits (up 2.8%).
Within major crops, sugarcane led gains with a 6.2% increase to 89.45 million tons. Wheat rose 4.3% to 29.61 million tons, while rice grew 2.8% to nearly 10 million tons. These gains helped offset declines in maize (-2.7%) and cotton (-0.5%).
Several minor crops also posted strong increases, including potatoes (up 27.6%), chillies (23.5%), and bajra (7.2%). However, onion, jowar, and barley recorded declines.
Overall, the agriculture sector grew 2.89% in FY2026, up from 1.53% a year earlier, supported by improved input availability, government measures, and better-than-expected post-flood recovery across multiple crop segments.
