The federal government paid Rs. 2.935 trillion and Rs. 760 million to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) during the first 11 months of fiscal year 2025-26, according to Ministry of Energy documents.
The payments cover electricity supplied from July 2025 to May 2026. Billing for June 2026 was still pending when the figures were compiled.
The Ministry of Energy said the government did not pay any IPP above the rates approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) or the rates agreed under contracts with the power producers.
Hydropower plants generated the largest amount of electricity at 34,234 gigawatt hours (GWh) and received Rs. 375.04 billion.
Nuclear plants produced 21,031 GWh and received Rs. 469.44 billion, while imported coal-based plants generated 12,048 GWh and were paid Rs. 637.91 billion.
RLNG-based plants generated 16,097 GWh and received Rs. 527.10 billion. Gas-fired plants produced 10,588 GWh, with payments of Rs. 200.84 billion.
Wind power generation stood at 3,804 GWh, with payments totaling Rs. 144.43 billion. Solar plants generated 1,074 GWh and received Rs. 36.51 billion.
Bagasse-based plants generated 714 GWh during the period and were paid Rs. 14.82 billion.
The data does not include the final month of the fiscal year, as June 2026 billing had not yet been completed.
