GTA 6 fans may have to wait years for the game’s biggest feature after Rockstar Games appears set to launch the highly anticipated title without its online multiplayer mode.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, but Rockstar has still not revealed when GTA 6 Online will arrive. Unlike GTA 5, there is currently no indication that the multiplayer mode will be available shortly after launch.
That could leave players with only the main single-player game for a lengthy period.
The wait would be a major change from GTA 5. Rockstar released GTA 5 in September 2013, followed by GTA Online just over two weeks later. More than 13 years later, GTA Online remains one of the company’s biggest money-making platforms.
Rockstar has a strong reason not to rush its next online game. GTA Online continues to attract players and generate substantial revenue through in-game purchases, giving the company plenty of time to develop and launch its successor.
GTA 6 has also been a massive development project. Rockstar has already delayed the game several times, and the studio is now concentrating on finishing and polishing the main title ahead of its November release.
Launching GTA 6 Online at the same time could add another major development challenge.
Instead, Rockstar could allow GTA 6 to establish itself first before introducing its new multiplayer world. Industry expectations currently point to a wait of potentially one or two years, although Rockstar has not confirmed any such timeline.
The company is also unlikely to shut down GTA Online immediately when its successor eventually arrives. Millions of players have spent years building characters, businesses and virtual assets in the existing game, making the transition to a completely new online world a major decision.
For GTA 6 players, however, the message is frustrating: the game is finally arriving in November, but the online experience that helped make GTA 5 a phenomenon could still be years away.
Rockstar has not officially announced a release date or launch window for GTA 6 Online, so the exact wait remains unknown.
