Goods transport charges have surged by up to 40 percent after the government raised petrol and diesel prices every day from Monday to Friday.

The sharp increase in freight rates has followed a steep rise in fuel costs, with high-speed diesel climbing above Rs. 400 per litre.

Transporters have increased charges for moving goods between major cities, raising the cost of transporting food, vegetables, fruits and other essential items.

Container freight rates on some routes have also jumped sharply, adding to costs for businesses and traders.

The increase in transport charges is likely to put further pressure on prices as higher freight costs are passed through supply chains to consumers.

The latest rise comes after five consecutive days of fuel price increases, putting additional strain on businesses and households already facing higher energy and transportation costs.
