Automated bots now account for more web traffic than humans in Cloudflare’s latest measurement, with the company’s CFO warning that non-human traffic could become 1,000 times larger than human traffic within five years if current growth continues.
Cloudflare’s data showed bots generating 57.5 percent of HTTP requests to HTML content, compared with 42.5 percent from human users. The figures mark an earlier-than-expected shift, as Cloudflare had previously projected that automated traffic would overtake human traffic in 2027.
The figures should not be interpreted as meaning machines consume more internet content than people overall. The measurement covers HTTP requests to HTML content and does not represent activities such as video streaming, scrolling or other forms of human online consumption.
Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert has warned that the gap could expand dramatically as AI-powered agents become more widely used. He estimates that non-human traffic could eventually reach 1,000 times the level of human traffic within five years if the current trend persists.
AI agents are expected to drive much of this growth. Unlike traditional bots used primarily for scraping, spam or malicious activity, AI agents can independently browse websites, search for information, access APIs, compare products and carry out tasks for users.
This means the growing bot traffic is not necessarily fraudulent or harmful. A significant portion is expected to come from legitimate automated services operating on behalf of people and businesses.
The shift is creating a new challenge for websites and online platforms. As automated activity grows, companies will need to determine which agents are legitimate, what data they are permitted to access and whether their behavior remains within authorized limits.
The increase in machine-to-machine activity could also affect how companies measure website traffic, manage server capacity, protect data and distinguish potential customers from automated systems.
The trend points toward an internet where humans increasingly initiate tasks while AI agents perform much of the browsing and information gathering in the background, potentially creating a web dominated by interactions between machines.
