Mari Energies Limited has taken a decisive step toward monetising its Waziristan Block discovery, awarding a gas sale contract to Universal Gas Distribution Company (Pvt.) Ltd following a competitive bidding round — a move that edges the promising Spinwam field closer to full commercial producti

In a filing with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company confirmed it had issued a Letter of Award to Universal Gas Distribution after evaluating bids submitted in response to an invitation floated on May 15, 2026. Under the terms, Mari Energies will supply up to 17.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of natural gas from the Spinwam discovery.

The parties will now pursue the regulatory and other approvals mandated under the government’s Framework for Sale of Gas to Third Parties, notified through S.R.O. 11(I)/2025 — a policy mechanism designed to facilitate direct gas sales outside the traditional public-sector procurement chain.

Mari Energies operates the Waziristan Block with a 55 percent working interest. Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) holds 35 percent, while Orient Petroleum Inc. carries the remaining 10 percent stake in the joint venture.

The Spinwam story has moved fast. Mari Energies first struck gas and condensate at the Spinwam-1 exploratory well in February 2025. What followed was a streak of three additional discoveries — from the Kawagarh, Hangu, and Lockhart formations — over the subsequent months, confirming that the well taps multiple hydrocarbon-bearing zones.

Extended Well Testing (EWT) kicked off in April 2026, with the field initially flowing around 40 MMscfd of gas and 200 barrels of condensate per day. Combined with output from the nearby Shewa field, total production from the two assets has now climbed to roughly 100 MMscfd — a meaningful contribution to the country’s domestic gas supply at a time when indigenous production is under pressure.
