The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) came under sharp criticism during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior after lawmakers accused its officials of withholding information to conceal the authority’s failure to meet its tax collection target.
Committee Convener Senator Saifullah Abro strongly objected to the briefing provided by FBR officials, alleging that parliament had been presented with inaccurate information.
During the proceedings, Abro directed the FBR’s Chief Operations officer to leave the meeting, saying, “Get out from the committee,” while expressing frustration over what he described as repeated misinformation.
The senator also criticized the performance of senior FBR officials, claiming that a handful of officers had caused significant damage to the institution and questioning why they continued to hold key positions despite allegedly providing misleading facts to lawmakers.
The incident reflects growing parliamentary scrutiny of the FBR’s tax collection performance and the accuracy of its reporting. The tax authority has yet to issue an official statement in response to the allegations.
