British International Investment (BII) has identified Pakistan as a key investment market as it prepares to invest at least $2 billion across Asia and Africa between 2026 and 2031.
BII Managing Director and Head of Asia Srini Nagarajan discussed plans to expand the institution’s investment in Pakistan during a meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in Islamabad on September 10.
Nagarajan said Pakistan was an important destination for BII and expressed interest in significantly increasing its investment in the country.
The discussions covered infrastructure, climate finance, private equity, SME financing, financial services and other opportunities linked to Pakistan’s economic reforms.
BII also plans to attract additional private investment alongside its own financing. Its areas of interest include renewable energy, power transmission, infrastructure, technology, private credit and private equity.
The delegation highlighted the potential for private equity funds, fund-of-funds structures and private credit to expand long-term financing in Pakistan.
The Finance Minister briefed BII on reforms in taxation, energy, tariffs, capital markets and digitalization, while highlighting the government’s privatization program and efforts to increase private-sector participation.
He also cited Pakistan’s $3 billion international bond issuance, progress on privatization and improvements in sovereign credit ratings as signs of stronger investor confidence.
The two sides also discussed possible investment in climate-related projects and infrastructure, as well as new capital-market instruments for infrastructure financing.
The Finance Minister highlighted efforts to establish a National Private Equity Policy Framework and expand financing for SMEs, agriculture and other underserved sectors.
BII said it remains interested in Pakistan and is ready to explore additional investment opportunities and private capital mobilization.
Both sides agreed to continue working on specific investment opportunities and other measures to increase investment in Pakistan.
