South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman has warned that growing scrutiny of US President Donald Trump’s business interests and those of his family could influence Washington’s trade diplomacy, with potential implications for Pakistan’s economic engagement with the United States.

In a post on X, reported by the BBC, Kugelman said an expected Democratic takeover of Congress could bring greater oversight of Trump’s business activities and lead to investigations into possible conflicts of interest.

He noted that Pakistan has placed considerable emphasis on strengthening business and trade relations with the Trump administration. Increased congressional scrutiny could become an important factor in how the administration handles its commercial and trade engagements.

Trump’s Business Interests Could Face Congressional Scrutiny

Potential areas of investigation include Trump’s cryptocurrency venture World Liberty Financial and investments from the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries.

Democrats could also examine Middle Eastern funding received by Jared Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners, and the business activities of Donald Trump Jr.’s 1789 Capital.

Other issues that could attract congressional attention include possible foreign influence and whether businesses linked to the Trump family received favorable government contracts, loans, or other federal benefits.

Kugelman’s assessment highlights how domestic political developments in Washington could shape the environment for countries seeking closer economic and trade ties with the United States, including Pakistan.
