U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that the United States would launch military strikes against Iranian infrastructure if Tehran attacks commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that whenever Iran targets a ship in the strategic waterway with missiles, rockets, drones, or any other weapon, the U.S. would retaliate by bombing a bridge or power plant inside Iran, including facilities near the capital, Tehran.

The warning marks a sharp escalation in Washington’s rhetoric as tensions with Tehran continue to intensify following recent military exchanges and repeated threats to international shipping.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, with around 20 percent of global oil consumption passing through the route. Any disruption to shipping there has the potential to rattle global energy markets and international trade.

Trump’s latest remarks underscore a policy of direct military retaliation against any Iranian attack on commercial shipping and come amid growing concerns over security in the Gulf.
