A preliminary probe by the Sindh Chief Minister’s Inspection Team has uncovered alleged financial irregularities exceeding Rs. 8.5 billion in Karachi’s Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, leading to a broader investigation into the mega transport scheme.

The inquiry was initiated on the directives of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah after reports of large-scale financial mismanagement surfaced within the Transport Department. The inspection team, led by Bilal Memon, has completed its initial findings and submitted a detailed report to the chief minister.

The report alleges that Project Director Zamir Abbasi and another official, Jhuman Das, bypassed required financial controls and approved advance payments totaling Rs. 8.5 billion to contractors, in violation of contractual terms and government procedures.

It further warns that these irregular payments may have placed both the BRT Yellow Line project and its financing agreements with lending institutions at serious risk.

Investigators also highlighted repeated violations in contract management, tax deductions, and the proper transfer of funds to the national exchequer. The findings suggest misuse of authority, resulting in financial losses to the Sindh government and associated financial partners.

The inquiry notes that a criminal investigation has already been recommended, and an anti-corruption case has been registered. It also states that the alleged misconduct could impact the future government service eligibility of the officials involved.
