Punjab has announced the development of a large-scale “Film City” in Lahore as part of efforts to revive Pakistan’s declining film industry and strengthen the country’s creative economy.

The proposed 50-acre complex will be built in the provincial capital and is aimed at rebuilding filmmaking infrastructure that has weakened over decades due to falling cinema attendance, limited investment, and the rise of digital entertainment platforms.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the project has been designed after consultations with filmmakers, producers, and actors, and is intended to create a complete production ecosystem within Pakistan rather than relying on foreign facilities.

According to her statement, the Film City will include modern production studios, sound stages, visual effects and post-production facilities, outdoor filming sets, and dedicated spaces for media and entertainment businesses. The plan also features a convention hall for international events, a film and music training institute, and supporting safety and emergency services.

Officials say the project is part of a broader attempt to revive Pakistan’s cinema sector, which has seen gradual signs of recovery in recent years through new multiplexes and locally produced films gaining audience traction again.

The government expects the initiative to generate employment opportunities, attract private investment, and position Punjab as a regional hub for film and digital content production.

Sharif described the project as an investment in young talent, saying it would provide a platform for creators to showcase Pakistani stories and improve the country’s global cultural footprint.
