The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Wednesday notified an increase of about 34 paise per unit in fuel charges for May, adding an estimated Rs. 4.2 billion burden on consumers in July bills.

In a notification, Nepra said the positive fuel cost adjustment (FCA) of Rs0.3364 per unit for May 2026 will apply to all consumer categories of K-Electric and ex-Wapda distribution companies, except lifeline consumers, electric vehicle charging stations and prepaid electricity consumers.

The revised FCA will also apply to consumers under the incremental consumption package.

Discos and K-Electric have been directed to reflect the adjustment in July 2026 bills.

Nepra said the net average fuel cost in July would still be around 4 paise per unit lower than June, as the new FCA of Rs0.336 per unit will replace the Rs1.19 per unit FCA applicable in June.

Under the tariff system, monthly fuel cost changes are passed on to consumers through an automatic adjustment mechanism, while quarterly tariff changes on account of power purchase prices, capacity payments, variable operation and maintenance costs, system charges and transmission and distribution losses are incorporated into the base tariff by the federal government.
