A parliamentary committee has asked the government to reconsider its decision to reduce speed limits on motorways and national highways, arguing that the matter should be reviewed in light of concerns raised by lawmakers.

The issue came under discussion during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee sub-committee on Thursday, chaired by Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

During the session, committee member Rana Qasim Noon proposed restoring the previous speed limit for cars on motorways from 100 kilometres per hour to 120 kilometres per hour. He urged the motorway police to revisit the decision and consider reversing the reduction for motorists.

The meeting was attended by the communications secretary and the Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorway Police. The committee also reviewed audit reports of the Ministry of Communications for the years 2003-04 and 2009-11.

At the outset of the meeting, lawmakers discussed the recently lowered speed limits on motorways and highways, with members questioning the rationale behind the move and calling for a fresh review.

In response, the Inspector General of the motorway police told the committee that the department was only responsible for implementing decisions taken by the government.

The discussion signals growing concern among lawmakers over the revised speed restrictions and their impact on motorists using the country’s road network.
