Pakistan has been removed from the Joint War Committee’s (JWC) Listed Areas, ending its long-standing status as a high-risk maritime zone and potentially reducing war-risk insurance costs for vessels operating at Pakistani ports.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the decision would lower shipping expenses, improve the competitiveness of Pakistani exports, and boost confidence among global shipping companies, traders, and investors.

The JWC, which represents the Lloyd’s Market Association and the International Underwriting Association, identifies maritime regions facing elevated security risks. Ships entering listed areas generally pay additional war-risk insurance premiums.

Pakistan initiated efforts for removal from the list in March 2026, arguing that its maritime security situation had significantly improved despite remaining classified as high-risk for decades. A government committee presented technical evidence during discussions with insurance market representatives, leading to the country’s delisting.

The move is expected to enhance the appeal of Port of Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port for international shipping lines and support Pakistan’s goal of becoming a regional logistics and transshipment hub.
