The federal government has begun restoring internet services across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), ending a weeks-long suspension with a phased rollout that started in Mirpur Division.
According to official sources, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) initiated the restoration after receiving directions from the federal government. Internet services had remained suspended across AJK since June 5 due to the prevailing law and order situation.
Mirpur Division is the first region to regain internet connectivity under the phased plan. Authorities said services in Muzaffarabad and the remaining divisions will also be restored once the security situation improves.
The restoration comes just days before Mirpur Division’s elections scheduled for July 27, allowing residents to regain digital connectivity ahead of the polls.
Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the expected restoration of internet services in Mirpur, attributing the development to the efforts of the PPP in AJK and the intervention of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission.
He also expressed hope that internet restrictions in Muzaffarabad and other parts of AJK would be lifted soon. Officials said connectivity in the remaining divisions is expected to be restored in the coming days if the law and order situation continues to improve.
