Google’s compliance with Pakistani laws has reached 88 percent, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman.
Speaking at the launch of Google’s Digital Pasban program, the PTA chairman said the regulator receives around 500 social media-related complaints every day.
He said the PTA holds in-person meetings with social media companies every two months, while he also meets their representatives online every week to discuss local laws and regulatory requirements.
Hafeez Ur Rehman said the PTA is working with technology and social media companies to improve compliance as new digital platforms and technologies continue to develop.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to improve connectivity, noting that Pakistan auctioned 480 MHz of spectrum in March, the highest amount offered in a single spectrum auction in the country.
The PTA chairman also raised concerns about children spending increasing amounts of time on digital platforms. He stressed the need for parents, regulators and technology companies to work together to promote safer and more responsible use of social media.
He said creating safer online spaces is particularly important for children and future generations as digital platform usage continues to grow.
