The federal government has approved policy directives allowing telecom operators to conduct 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, marking an initial step toward introducing next-generation mobile services in the region.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority prepared the directives on behalf of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, which were approved under relevant provisions of the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018.
Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON, Amir Muqam, confirmed the approval and said the move is aimed at improving digital connectivity and supporting economic activity in the region, particularly in tourism and remote-area communication.
Officials said the decision will enable telecom companies to begin 5G testing in selected areas, paving the way for broader rollout in the future. The initiative is also expected to improve internet speed, network reliability, and access to digital services in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Authorities added that the approval is part of ongoing efforts to modernize telecom infrastructure in the region, with further steps expected toward a 5G spectrum auction that would allow commercial deployment in the coming phases.
