The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to October 15, giving taxpayers an additional 15 days to submit their returns.
FBR announced the extension on September 30, moving the deadline from the original September 30 cutoff.
The decision followed requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations, according to FBR’s official notification.
The extension also comes as taxpayers continue to report technical problems with the FBR’s IRIS filing system, including slowdowns, glitches and difficulties in submitting returns.
The FBR received 5.8 million income tax returns by September 30, 2026, compared with 3.8 million returns during the same period last year, sources said.
Despite the higher number of returns, tax collected through returns was around Rs. 8 billion lower than last year, according to sources.
FBR has also achieved its tax collection target of Rs. 3,053 billion for the first quarter of the current financial year. It also met its September 2026 target of Rs. 1,330 billion.
Total tax collections for July to September 2026 are expected to reach around Rs. 3,072 billion, sources said.
The additional filing period will give taxpayers more time to complete their documentation and submit returns through the IRIS portal.
