The Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA) has asked the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the income tax return filing deadline for Tax Year 2026 to December 2, citing persistent technical problems and errors in the filing system.

In a letter to FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, the association said the extension to October 15, announced on September 30, had failed to resolve taxpayers’ difficulties.

The PTBA said glitches in the IRIS portal and errors in return forms were continuing to disrupt filings. Taxpayers were also facing difficulties updating property details and entering International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) for their bank accounts.

The association said it had repeatedly asked the FBR to bring the filing system in line with the Income Tax Ordinance and relevant rules while removing unnecessary technical and procedural hurdles.

It also raised concerns about the minimum tax calculation formula in the return system, saying it was producing incorrect results in certain cases involving taxpayers who earned income from multiple sources.

According to the PTBA, it has raised the issue with tax authorities through correspondence, meetings and discussions involving the FBR chairman, relevant officials and Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL). However, the association said the disputed formula had yet to be corrected despite repeated requests.

The PTBA has urged the FBR to extend the deadline to December 2, fix the calculation formula and resolve the remaining technical issues to give taxpayers and tax practitioners enough time to file accurate returns.
