Pakistan’s livestock sector recorded broad-based growth over the past year, with increases seen in major animal categories including cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and camels, according to official data.

The document shows that the donkey population rose by 113,000, reaching 6.16 million, compared to 6.047 million a year earlier, reflecting its continued role in rural transport and agricultural use.

Buffalo numbers increased significantly by 1.467 million, rising from 47.688 million to 49.155 million, strengthening Pakistan’s dairy production base.

The sheep population also grew by 392,000, reaching 33.511 million, supporting both meat and wool-related industries.

Goats, one of the largest livestock categories, increased by 2.422 million, highlighting their importance in rural livelihoods and domestic meat supply.

The report further recorded a rise in the camel population, which increased from 1.177 million to 1.193 million, while horses and mules also posted marginal gains to 386,000 and 221,000, respectively.

Cattle numbers showed strong expansion, increasing by 2.249 million to reach 61.96 million, making it one of the most significant contributors to overall livestock growth.

The overall increase across categories highlights steady expansion in Pakistan’s livestock sector, which remains a key contributor to rural employment, food security, and the broader agricultural economy.
