Customs authorities have foiled a smuggling attempt after recovering a large quantity of foreign-origin cigarettes and Chinese salt concealed inside a refrigerated container in Balochistan.
According to officials, a vehicle bearing registration number TLH-218 was intercepted at FEU Ziarat Cross while transporting a reefer container under suspicious circumstances.
During initial questioning, the driver claimed the movement was authorized through a special permit allegedly issued by the Ministry of Interior. He also presented a document purportedly endorsed by customs authorities, claiming approval for the transport route from Mangochar to Multan.
However, officials said inconsistencies quickly emerged when the driver gave conflicting statements about the loading point of the cargo, first referring to Mangochar and later shifting the origin to Hazar Ganji in Quetta.
The discrepancies in the documentation, combined with the unusual nature of transporting vegetable cargo under sensitive authorization, raised suspicion among customs staff.
Despite resistance, authorities proceeded with a physical inspection of the container. The search initially revealed sacks of potatoes placed at the front. After removing the vegetable layer, officials discovered concealed bags of foreign-origin Ajinomoto, commonly known as Chinese salt.
Further inspection led to the recovery of cartons of foreign-origin cigarettes hidden beneath the cargo.
Officials said the concealment method indicated a coordinated smuggling attempt using perishable goods as cover along with a suspected forged official authorization document.
According to the seizure report, the recovered items included 70 cartons of cigarettes, 250 bags of Chinese salt weighing 25 kilograms each, 250 bags of potatoes in decayed condition, and the truck trailer with the refrigerated container.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the supply chain, destination, and individuals involved in the smuggling network.
