The federal cabinet has approved the Defence Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, advancing key legislation introduced after the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The decisions were taken at a cabinet meeting in Islamabad chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday.
The Defence Forces Act 2026 is designed to establish the administrative and institutional framework for the newly created office of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and the CDF Headquarters.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the proposed law is part of the legislative process following the constitutional changes made through the 27th Amendment.
The cabinet-approved draft will now be presented before Parliament for consideration and approval during its ongoing session.
The government has also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010. The proposed changes have been described as necessary to bring the law in line with the constitutional amendments.
The amended National Command Authority Act will also be placed before Parliament.
With cabinet approval secured, both measures will now move to the parliamentary stage for further consideration.
