In a decisive move to tackle the issue of illegal SIM cards, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 69,000 SIMs that were issued against canceled or fake identity cards. This action marks a significant step in curbing fraudulent activities associated with unverified SIM cards across the country.

The crackdown follows the August 16 deadline for biometric verification, after which the PTA identified and blocked SIMs issued against invalid or fraudulent identity documents.

This measure is part of a broader effort to ensure that all active SIMs in Pakistan are linked to legitimate identity cards, thereby enhancing security and reducing the potential for misuse.

For users whose SIMs have been blocked, the PTA has outlined a clear process for restoration. Affected individuals must first obtain new identity cards from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

Once they have valid identification, they can visit their mobile operator or franchise to have their SIMs unblocked through biometric verification.

Additionally, the PTA has issued a warning regarding SIMs issued against expired identity cards prior to 2017. These SIMs are set to be blocked within a week unless users renew their identity cards through NADRA and complete the necessary verification process.
