A confidential United Nations investigation has detailed an alleged network involving the United Arab Emirates that facilitated the deployment of Colombian mercenaries to fight alongside Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to a report obtained by Middle East Eye, UAE-based Global Security Services Group (GSSG) helped transport Colombian fighters into Sudan through Libya, Somalia and Chad.
The investigators also identified the UAE-linked Puntland Maritime Police Force base in Bosaso, Somalia, as a location used for the transit or training of Colombian mercenaries before their deployment.
The report further describes supply routes involving territories controlled by forces linked to the Haftar family in Libya and areas in Ethiopia, Chad and Somalia.
The Colombian fighters reportedly provided military support to the RSF, including assistance with drones, artillery and ground operations in Sudan’s Darfur region.
The findings come amid continued international scrutiny of foreign involvement in Sudan’s conflict, which began in April 2023.
The UAE and other entities identified in the allegations have denied wrongdoing.
The report’s disclosures have also raised political questions as UAE diplomat Lana Nusseibeh campaigns for the position of United Nations secretary-general.
