Pakistan has developed a climate forecasting system that can provide outlooks up to 12 months ahead, as the government seeks to improve disaster preparedness and reduce the economic impact of climate-related risks.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb discussed the system with outgoing National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik and incoming Chairman Lieutenant General Hasan Khattak on October 23.

Aurangzeb described climate change and population growth as two major challenges for Pakistan, warning of their implications for food security, communities, public finances and economic stability.

He also said climate change and its effects on Pakistan were discussed with international partners during the recent IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings.

Pakistan Seeks Better Disaster Warnings

Malik briefed the finance minister on the forecasting system and efforts to improve its capabilities. Aurangzeb stressed that forecasts must translate into timely action, with stronger coordination between the NDMA, Pakistan Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies.

The NDMA also outlined initiatives involving the Global Resilience Hub and next-generation technologies to strengthen disaster planning and reduce risks before emergencies occur.

The meeting highlighted the need for trained climate specialists, technical staff and clearly defined institutional responsibilities to maintain the system and improve forecasting capabilities over time.

Government Seeks Climate Funding

Aurangzeb called for greater domestic resource mobilisation and engagement with international development partners to finance climate resilience and disaster preparedness.

He also stressed the need to prioritise projects with measurable results and ensure that investments improve Pakistan’s ability to anticipate and manage climate risks.

The finance minister acknowledged Malik’s contribution during his tenure and wished Hasan Khattak success as he takes over the NDMA.
