The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) receives around 500 complaints about social media content every day, PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman told lawmakers on Thursday.

He shared the figure during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan on September 24.

The PTA chairman said complaints come from users about different social media platforms. He also noted that some issues may go unreported or remain unidentified.

The regulator reviews the reported material and contacts the relevant platforms when action is required. PTA has previously stated that a significant amount of flagged content is removed after requests are sent to technology companies.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about offensive content circulating online and called for stronger protections for younger users.

The discussion highlighted the growing number of social media-related complaints being handled by the PTA as internet and social media use continues to expand in Pakistan.
