Japan will provide Pakistan with a $16.4 million grant to strengthen flood protection infrastructure in Sindh.

Pakistan and Japan signed the agreement on Monday for a project to improve flood protection and strengthen a section of the Old Abad Bund along the right bank of the Indus River in Larkana.

The project aims to reinforce the embankment and improve protection for communities in flood-prone areas of Sindh.

Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai and Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Akamatsu Shuichi signed the Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion for the project.

A separate grant agreement was signed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Sabina Qureshi and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Senior Representative in Pakistan Sugawara Takayuki.

Under the agreement, Japan will provide a grant of JPY 2.58 billion, equivalent to about $16.4 million, for improvement work on the Old Abad Bund in Larkana.

Kidwai thanked Japan for its continued development support and highlighted JICA’s technical assistance in Pakistan.

Ambassador Akamatsu said Japan would continue working with Pakistan to expand bilateral cooperation.

JICA’s Sugawara also reaffirmed the agency’s support for improving flood protection infrastructure in vulnerable areas of Sindh.
