The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed sharply lower on Monday, with the KSE-100 Index losing 1,693 points, or 0.97 percent, to settle at 173,636.

The index touched an intraday high of 175,353 before falling to 173,603 as renewed tensions between the United States and Iran and elevated global oil prices kept investors cautious.

Market sentiment was also affected by concerns over inflation, pressure on the external account and the broader economic outlook.

Refinery stocks came under pressure after reports that the government plans to penalise oil refineries that fail to sign Upgradation Agreements with the Petroleum Division by October 1, 2026.

UBL, OGDC, PPL, MCB and FFC were the biggest drags on the benchmark, cutting around 811 points collectively. PSEL, AKBL and AICL offered some support, adding about 117 points.

Trading remained active, with 679 million shares exchanged during the session. The total traded value stood at around Rs. 23.6 billion.
