The federal government’s spending on fuel for its officials, ministries, departments and attached institutions rose by around 190 percent over five years, reaching Rs. 21.77 billion in fiscal year 2024-25.

According to official documents presented before Parliament, fuel expenditure increased from Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21 to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.

The government attributed the sharp increase in spending to higher fuel prices during the period.

Fuel expenses stood at Rs. 8.35 billion in FY2021-22 before rising significantly to Rs. 15.66 billion in FY2022-23. Spending remained almost unchanged at Rs. 15.67 billion in FY2023-24.

The fuel bill then climbed to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25, representing a year-on-year increase of around 39 percent.

Overall, fuel expenditure by federal government entities increased by approximately 190 percent between FY2020-21 and FY2024-25, adding significantly to spending from public funds.

The government has maintained that the increase was primarily linked to the rise in fuel prices.
