International oil prices have climbed back above $90 per barrel, increasing the risk of another petrol and diesel price hike in Pakistan as the government reviews domestic fuel rates.
Brent crude rose above the $90 mark amid renewed geopolitical tensions and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies. The latest increase could put additional pressure on Pakistan’s fuel prices if international rates remain elevated during the ongoing pricing period.
Pakistan has already witnessed a sharp increase in fuel prices. On August 17, the government raised the price of petrol by Rs. 5.77 per litre to Rs. 331.20, while the price of high-speed diesel increased by Rs. 6.47 to Rs. 390.42 per litre.
The latest hike followed a period of frequent upward adjustments in domestic fuel prices, with only limited relief provided when international prices temporarily declined.
With crude oil now back above $90, another increase in global petroleum prices could translate into higher fuel costs for Pakistani consumers in the next pricing review.
The final decision, however, will depend on international petroleum prices, the exchange rate and other components used to calculate domestic fuel prices.
