The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Wednesday concluded a public hearing on a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) to increase electricity tariffs by Rs. 1.20 per unit under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for June 2026.
During the hearing, CPPA informed the regulator that 13.07 billion units of electricity were supplied to consumers during the month.
According to the agency, the reference fuel cost approved for June stood at Rs. 7.71 per unit, while the actual fuel cost reached Rs. 8.91 per unit, creating a gap of Rs. 1.20 per unit that it has requested to recover through the monthly FCA.
CPPA attributed the higher generation cost to greater reliance on re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG)-based power plants, which increased the overall cost of electricity production during the month.
During the proceedings, NEPRA Member Maqsood Anwar said the focus should shift from discussing cheaper electricity to ensuring that consumers actually receive affordable power.
The regulator has reserved its decision on the proposed adjustment. A final determination will be issued after reviewing the request and the comments submitted during the hearing.
