Pakistan’s tractor fleet has more than doubled over the past two decades, but two manufacturers continue to dominate the country’s agricultural machinery market, according to the 7th Agricultural Census 2024.

The census, conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), counted 986,998 tractors nationwide, with Massey Ferguson and Fiat accounting for 863,322 units, or nearly 87 percent of the total fleet.

Massey Ferguson remained the market leader with 519,653 tractors, representing more than half of all tractors in Pakistan. Its fleet has grown by 202 percent since the previous agricultural machinery census in 2004.

Fiat, including locally assembled New Holland Fiat models, ranked second with 343,669 tractors, recording growth of 108 percent over the same period.

The latest census shows Massey Ferguson has widened its lead significantly. In 2004, the two brands held almost equal market shares, but Massey Ferguson now accounts for 53 percent of Pakistan’s tractor fleet compared with 35 percent for Fiat.

The data also identified the Massey Ferguson 240 as Pakistan’s most widely used tractor, with 207,294 units in operation. The New Holland Fiat 480 followed with 170,726 units.

Together, the two models account for nearly four out of every 10 tractors operating across the country.

The census further shows that tractors in the 45 to 55 horsepower range make up almost half of Pakistan’s fleet, reflecting demand from small and medium-sized farms.

Regionally, Punjab remained the largest market for both leading brands. However, Sindh emerged as an exception, where Belarus ranked as the second-largest tractor brand with 21,725 units, ahead of Fiat’s 18,294.

In Balochistan, Massey Ferguson maintained an overwhelming lead with 52,327 tractors, while Fiat had only 404 units, highlighting the brand’s limited presence in the province.
