The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning that rising temperatures could trigger dangerous flooding during the first week of July.
According to the PMD, above-normal temperatures are expected to continue across the northern mountainous regions, accelerating glacier and snow melt. The increased meltwater may cause glacier lakes to expand and, in some cases, burst, leading to sudden floods in vulnerable valleys.
The alert covers all glacier-fed valleys and catchment areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as Upper Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Upper Dir, Shangla, and nearby districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Authorities warned that any GLOF incident could trigger flash floods, damage roads, bridges, homes, and other infrastructure, disrupt transportation and communication networks, and increase the likelihood of landslides in steep terrain.
The PMD has urged residents, tourists, and local administrations to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, glaciers, and narrow valleys, and closely monitor official weather advisories. Emergency response agencies have also been advised to stay prepared for any rapid changes in weather and water levels.
