The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised the public to either transfer or block mobile SIMs registered in the names of deceased persons through the official Change of Ownership (COO) process.

The authority said the measure is aimed at preventing potential misuse of inactive SIMs and ensuring that telecom services remain properly regulated and legally documented.

According to the advisory, SIM ownership can only be transferred to eligible legal heirs, including a spouse or close blood relatives. Applicants are required to visit the nearest customer service center or authorized franchise of the relevant mobile operator to complete the process.

PTA stated that the required documents include a Family Registration Certificate (FRC), the death certificate of the SIM owner, the original SIM card, and proof of usage. These documents are used to verify eligibility and establish lawful transfer of ownership.

The regulator stressed that updating or blocking such SIMs in a timely manner is necessary to prevent unauthorized use after the subscriber’s death. It warned that unregistered or inactive numbers could be exploited if records are not properly updated.

PTA added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen secure and responsible telecom usage in the country and encouraged users to seek assistance from mobile operators or official PTA support channels.
