The Power Division has issued a public warning over the misuse of electricity bill information and QR codes, following reports that such data is being used on unauthorized platforms for fake subsidy registrations and other unverified purposes.
The alert was shared by Joint Secretary and Power Division spokesperson Zafar Ayub on X (formerly Twitter), along with a “fake” graphic circulating online that imitates an official electricity subsidy registration process.
The spokesperson cautioned consumers not to share electricity bill QR codes or personal billing information on any platform other than officially designated government channels.
According to the Power Division, certain individuals and groups are attempting to misuse electricity bill data and QR codes for unauthorized and potentially illegal activities. Officials emphasized that subsidy-related information must not be submitted through third-party websites, social media posts, or unofficial forms.
The ministry stated that such activities are illegal and have already been reported to relevant law enforcement agencies. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid sharing sensitive information such as electricity bills or QR codes with unverified sources.
Consumers were further advised to rely only on official government communication channels for subsidy registration and related updates. Any suspicious requests for information were urged to be reported immediately.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns over digital fraud and misinformation campaigns targeting government welfare and subsidy programs.
