U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a temporary three-day ceasefire in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, scheduled for May 9, 10, and 11, 2026.

The pause in fighting is expected to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day period, with both sides also acknowledging Ukraine’s historical role in World War II commemorations. The agreement reportedly includes a full halt in military operations and a large prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side.

Trump stated that the arrangement was reached after direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He added that both leaders agreed to the temporary truce as part of broader efforts to explore a possible end to the war.

The Russia–Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has now been ongoing for about four years. Trump described the development as a potential shift in the conflict, suggesting it could become a stepping stone toward longer-term peace negotiations.

Diplomatic talks are expected to continue during and after the ceasefire period, with hopes of building momentum toward a more permanent resolution.
