Pakistan has once again moved to the forefront of international diplomacy after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary suspension of the American naval initiative known as Project Freedom in the Strait of Hormuz, following Islamabad’s request to allow negotiations with Iran to continue.

Speaking shortly after the decision, Trump confirmed that the United States would pause the recently launched maritime security operation designed to escort commercial vessels through the strategically vital waterway. However, Washington will maintain broader pressure measures against Tehran while diplomatic engagement proceeds.

The US president said negotiations with Iran had made “significant progress,” signaling growing optimism about a potential agreement aimed at easing tensions in the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive energy corridors, handling nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments. The situation escalated after Iran effectively restricted shipping movements during the ongoing conflict, prompting the United States to deploy naval forces under Project Freedom to secure commercial traffic and counter Iranian naval activity.

Diplomatic sources say Pakistan has played an increasingly active behind-the-scenes role in recent weeks. Islamabad had urged Washington to avoid further military escalation and instead create space for political dialogue.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally appealed to President Trump to extend timelines for military action and prioritize negotiations. Pakistani officials also presented proposals aimed at easing tensions, including confidence-building measures linked to the maritime blockade.

Parallel diplomatic contacts involving Pakistan and Iran have continued through multiple channels, positioning Islamabad as a mediator working to reduce confrontation between Tehran and Washington.

Analysts view the suspension of Project Freedom as a calculated de-escalation step — one that allows the United States to preserve military leverage while signaling willingness to reach a negotiated outcome.

US officials maintain that earlier phases of their campaign achieved key strategic objectives, while Iranian authorities continue to reject claims of operational setbacks.

The latest development underscores Pakistan’s expanding diplomatic footprint in regional crisis management, particularly at a time when tensions surrounding global energy routes carry far-reaching economic and security implications.
