The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT) has announced plans to finalize the hiring of a consultant within the coming weeks to develop regulations for granting access to Starlink internet services in Pakistan. The move is part of the government’s efforts to establish a regulatory framework for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology.

A key meeting, chaired by Minister of State Shaza Fatima Khawaja on January 6, 2025, reviewed the progress on Starlink’s licensing and regulatory frameworks. The discussions focused on expediting the process to ensure a robust framework for LEO satellites, which are expected to enhance connectivity and drive technological innovation in the country.

The Minister emphasized the importance of aligning Pakistan’s policies with global standards to fully leverage satellite technology for national growth. “A strong regulatory framework will unlock the potential of satellite internet, improving connectivity and fostering innovation,” she stated.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Zarrar Hashim Khan, Secretary IT, Ministry of IT & Telecom; Azfar Manzoor, Special Secretary, Ministry of IT & Telecom; Amer Sarfaraz Ahmed, Chairman of the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board; Muhammad Yousuf Khan, Chairman of SUPARCO; Maj. Gen (R) Hafeez ur Rehman, Chairman of PTA; and Jehanzeb Rahim, Member (Telecom), Ministry of IT & Telecom.
