The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has formally informed the relevant authorities about a series of administrative, legal, and financial bottlenecks hindering progress on nine key water infrastructure projects in Sindh, according to a letter issued on Thursday.
WAPDA stated that the Nai Gaj Dam project continues to face delays due to legal disputes, despite the Sindh government having allocated 7,138 acres of land and deploying ten Frontier Corps personnel for site security.
The authority also noted that the Jacobabad-Shikarpur-Kashmor Drainage project, although allocated Rs 67 billion, has yet to commence construction work.
Progress on the Rs 212 billion Thar Canal project has been stalled after the Ministry of Water Resources did not respond to WAPDA’s request for funding approval. Additionally, the Indus River System Authority has not yet issued a no-objection certificate required for water allocation.
Similarly, the Rainee Canal Phase II and several related schemes across Tehsil Ubauro, Daharki, Khangadh, and Ghotki are also facing delays. WAPDA said feasibility studies remain incomplete, while Rs 156 billion in allocated funds have not yet been released by the Ministry of Water Resources.
The Darawat Dam project has also been delayed due to an unresolved dispute over project management responsibilities, along with outstanding payments owed to WAPDA.
