The Water and Power Development Authority on Monday said its hydel power generation crossed 6,000 megawatts on Sunday night after the Indus River System Authority increased water releases from reservoirs.
In a statement, Wapda said its hydropower stations supplied 6,118MW to the national grid during peak hours following the higher water indent from Irsa.
Among the major contributors, Tarbela Hydel Power Station generated 2,332MW, while the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project added 1,095MW. Ghazi Barotha contributed 1,160MW, Mangla 930MW, Warsak 135MW, and Chashma 101MW.
Wapda said its other medium and small hydel power stations collectively produced the remaining 365MW.
The authority noted that its 22 hydel power stations generated 33.12 billion units of electricity in 2025, accounting for around 30 percent of the total electricity produced in the national system.
During fiscal year 2023-24, Wapda’s power stations supplied a combined 34.436 billion units of electricity to the national grid, marking an increase of 3.266 billion units compared to the previous fiscal year.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources, Wapda’s hydropower projects currently have a total installed generation capacity of 9,459MW.
