The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has acknowledged that it faces limitations in preventing users from accessing TikTok Live in Pakistan because the feature can be reached through VPN services.

The matter was discussed at a Senate IT committee meeting on Thursday after lawmakers raised concerns about material being broadcast through TikTok Live.

Senator Afnan Ullah Khan claimed that inappropriate activities were taking place during TikTok Live sessions and alleged that some users were creating blasphemous content.

Senator Kamran Murtaza said such material was allegedly being circulated intentionally to provoke tensions in society.

PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman told the committee that TikTok Live is not officially offered in Pakistan. However, he explained that users can bypass this restriction by connecting through VPNs, making direct regulatory enforcement more difficult.

National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) officials told lawmakers that the agency refers cases involving unlawful online material to the PTA through written requests.

The PTA chairman said the authority takes action against objectionable content after complaints are received and the material is verified.

The discussion also highlighted the difficulty regulators face in enforcing restrictions on individual platform features when users can use alternative internet connections to access them.
