Norwegian telecom group Telenor ASA is exploring the sale of its majority stake in Easypaisa Bank, a move that could bring its more than 20-year presence in Pakistan to a close, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The company is reportedly working with Citigroup to evaluate strategic options for its 55 percent shareholding in the digital bank. The stake could be worth several hundred million dollars, though discussions remain preliminary and no final decision has been taken.

Sources said Telenor is expected to invite initial bids from prospective investors in the coming months as it assesses market interest. However, the process is still in its early stages and may not ultimately lead to a transaction.

Easypaisa, formerly operating as Telenor Microfinance Bank, has evolved into one of Pakistan’s largest digital financial services platforms, offering mobile wallets, money transfers, payments, and other banking services. The remaining stake in the bank is owned by Ant Group.

Representatives of Telenor ASA and Citigroup declined to comment, while Ant Group did not respond to media inquiries.

The potential divestment comes shortly after Telenor completed its withdrawal from Pakistan’s telecom sector, following regulatory approval for the sale of its local mobile operations in a deal valued at roughly $490 million.

If the Easypaisa stake is sold, Telenor would fully exit Pakistan, ending a presence that began more than two decades ago. Analysts say such a move would align with the company’s broader strategy of simplifying its operations and focusing on priority markets across Asia.
